I believe that the criminal justice system has become a harsh place where the accused is assumed guilty from the start rather than innocent until proven guilty. I have seen innocent people run over by this system in Arizona and have seen many people given ridiculously harsh sentences for very minor behavior. This unfair treatment is often greatest when poor persons, minorities or mentally ill persons are involved.
As a criminal defense attorney, my goal is to provide my clients with the best representation they can get. I will do everything I can to make sure my clients' rights are protected and the government follows the rules. Every person charged with a crime deserves to have their voice heard in the process. I fight to prevent the state from unfairly running over my clients. I know the system and work hard to make sure that my clients are always informed so that they can make the decisions that are right for them and make sure that the consequences to their lives are minimized.
I began my legal career working for a large civil firm in Phoenix. During this period I became more an more aware of the absurd reality of our criminal justice system and the constant attack upon and weakening of our constitutional liberties which goes on every day in this "tough on crime" climate. For that reason, I decided to go into criminal practice and fight this attack upon our rights.
I went to work for the Maricopa County Public Defender's Office. There I received an incredible amount of training and experience and was able to attend prestigious criminal trial colleges, including the Maricopa County Trial College and the Western Trial Advocacy Institute, in Wyoming. As a Public Defender I gained valuable experience in dealing with every type of criminal case imaginable from minor misdemeanors to the most serious violent felonies. As a Public Defender I practically lived in the courtroom rather than the office gaining more than 1000 hours of courtroom experience and handling hundreds of felonies ranging from property and drug related crimes, to serious violent offenses including sex crimes and homicide, as well as hundreds of misdemeanors including DUI, Domestic Violence, & Criminal Traffic cases.
The major drawback working as a Public Defender was the shear number of cases which I was required to handle at one time. When it reached a point that I felt I could no longer provide the quality representation that every one of my clients deserved, I left the Public Defender's Office in 2004 and now practice with no one but myself and my clients to make decisions on their cases. Knowing how detrimental it can be to be overextended, I keep the number of cases I handle at a reasonable number to make sure every client gets the time their case requires.
As a criminal defense attorney I have made many ties within Arizona's criminal defense community which allow me to keep on top of the current issues in criminal defense law to this day. This is a dynamic time in criminal defense law. Cases such as Blakely and Crawford have recently redefined the way in which prosecutors can present evidence and the manner in which courts can trump up the sentencing of a defendant. Both cases are a victory for protecting the rights of the accused and further remind us in the criminal defense field how vital it is for us to stay on top of the newest issues as they develop, and to constantly push the envelope and never accept that something is right just because it is the way it has been done for so long. For this reason, I focus my practice almost entirely on criminal and DUI defense so that am always focused on the defense of the accused.
It is my ultimate goal to make sure everyone regardless of class or race receives the representation that they deserve. For this reason, I try to donate my time and experience when I can. In the last year I have worked on two criminal matters, including a Murder Trial Pro Bono (without receiving pay) and donate time to providing legal assistance to homeless members of the community through Arizona State Universities Homeless Legal Assistance Program (HLAP).
If you or a loved one has been accused of a crime it is important to get all the information you can and proper representation. Feel free to call me at the office or on my 24-hour line. I offer free initial consultations and can usually give you a few minutes to answer question you may have, even if you are not interested in retaining my services. I also work with my clients as much possible to arrange payment plans where necessary to ensure that they get the representation they deserve.
